About Us

Our background

Leadbetter & Murphy was founded shortly after World War II by George Leadbetter and Michael Murphy. For many years the company was known as ‘The Catholic Funeral Directors’ mainly due to the large Catholic population of the area, but also because both George and Michael were active members of their local catholic church. Both men were popular within the community and many of their friends entrusted their family funerals to them. Even today, many of our customers come to us because their families ‘knew’ George Leadbetter and Michael Murphy. It’s a legacy we’re very proud of.

Our people

Today, Leadbetter & Murphy is run by husband and wife team, Eifion and Violet Wynne-Jones. They met while working at Craven’s Head Office at Craven Lodge and married six years later.

Eifion has been working in the funeral profession for over a decade and his experience in management, sales and customer service is invaluable in the running and development of the branch:

“All families are different in their requests and needs, but it’s always rewarding when they tell us that arranging the funeral with us was easy and stress free. We always tell families to contact us should they have any problems or ask questions, no matter how trivial they think the question may be. We never consider any question as being trivial.”

Violet has vast experience within the funeral profession, which she joined in 1978 at the age of 16. In fact, Violet was one of the first – and one of the youngest – female funeral directors in Liverpool:

“As a meticulous individual I always ensure that the wishes of the family are carried out to the letter on the day of the funeral. It is always satisfying and warming, when families shake my hand or give me a hug and thank me for everything I’ve done.”

Both Violet and Eifion are fully qualified, having both gained the NAFD Diploma in Funeral Directing.
